"Mentoring is to support and encourage people to manage their own learning in order that they may maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance and become the person they want to be." Eric Parsloe, The Oxford School of Coaching & Mentoring.

Mentoring is a powerful personal development and empowerment tool. It is an effective way of helping people to progress in their careers and is becoming increasing popular as its potential is realised. It is a partnership between two people (mentor and mentee) normally working in a similar field or sharing similar experiences. It is a helpful relationship based upon mutual trust and respect.

Karen Holland - Mentoring isn't for life, it's just when you need it.
"My first mentor helped me when I was doing a fellowship and trying to run a business! My second mentor was a high flying business woman who helped me resolve business issues I had at that time." Read more....
Hannah Woor -
Mentoring is about confidence.

"Having the opportunity to discuss work with an outside person and so having a different perspective, gives you a new way of looking at problems and work in general, and increases your confidence." Read more....
Penny Taylor - Moving successfully from one challenge to the next.
Penny doesn't feel that being a mentee shows any sign of weakness, in fact she feels that being part of MentorSET shows that people take their professional development seriously. Read more....

Cambridge AWiSE is affiliated to the National MentorSET Women's mentoring scheme which finds independent mentors for women working in SET fields in both industry and academia. MentorSET is person focused. It is less of a formalised professional relationship, more of a partnership with both the mentee and mentor gaining from the relationship. MentorSET provides guidelines and training for both mentors and mentees but the issues discussed will vary depending on the issues faced by the mentee.

Cambridge AWiSE members can join this scheme for free.
Look on the MentorSET website or email Cambridge AWiSE at info@camawise.org.uk for more information.

Nature also recently published an article on mentoring (Vol. 447, 4th June 2007) which you can download here.
We've also produced a small handout with questions and information on mentoring and networking.
