Josie Harries
What is your current profession/background?
I have a PhD in Synthetic Inorganic Chemistry from the University of Manchester and a postgraduate diploma in Strategy and Innovation from the University of Oxford. I began my career in R&D, developing inkjet technologies where I built a strong technical foundation in applied science and problem-solving.
Over time, my focus expanded beyond the lab into strategic leadership. I am currently Global Business Development Director for a global industrial printing solutions company, where I shape future-focused commercial strategies that drive growth and position the business for long-term success. My role sits at the intersection of science, innovation, and strategy.
What point in your life led you to pursue a career in STEMM?
I have always been curious and enjoyed experimenting. As a teenager, I was fascinated by cosmetics, colour, and cooking which naturally led me towards science, especially chemistry, where I could explore questions and create solutions.
Although I didn’t start with a fixed career plan, I knew I wanted a field that combined creativity and experimentation with real-world challenges. Chemistry offered that perfect balance, allowing me to turn curiosity into innovation and strategic influence.
What is one of your biggest aspirations?
I am motivated by continuous learning and growth. I want to keep expanding my knowledge and applying it to meaningful challenges, wherever they may arise.
For me, impact matters more than job title. I’m motivated by opportunities that allow me to shape strategy, enable others to perform at their best, translate science into tangible value, and learn new perspectives along the way.
What advice would you give to aspiring female scientists and engineers?
Build a strong network and promote your abilities. Step into opportunities, even if they feel a little daunting. Progress and growth rarely happen inside your comfort zone.
How have you benefited from being a part of CamAWiSE?
I joined the 2025 mentoring cohort and was fortunate to be paired with an excellent mentor who encouraged me to reflect deeply on my career trajectory and aspirations. That experience was incredibly valuable and led me to join the Steering Committee.
Being part of CamAWiSE has connected me with a community of talented, driven women in STEMM who are endlessly inspiring and energising.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I’m enthusiastic about sport and outdoor activity. I row, run, cycle, and swim, and I’m currently training for the Edinburgh Marathon with plans to do more trail running as the year progresses.
Creatively, I enjoy exploring different art forms and have recently taken up ceramics. I also enjoy making my own inks from foraged materials, which feeds both my scientific curiosity and artistic side and is a nice nod to where my career started.
